Philip Gabriel, educated as an architect and interior designer, has practiced for over 40 years in New York City, Ohio, Québec, and Ottawa. His background in the architectural offices of Eero Saarinen, Marcel Breuer and Edward Larrabee Barnes prepared him for work with Canadian architects Douglas Cardinal, Richard Henriquez and Ron Keenberg. Mr. Gabriel is Past president of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the National Capital Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

Recent lighting projects by Gabriel Mackinnon include: Ottawa University School of Information Technology & Engineering, Vancouver Airport, Hilton Lac Leamy Convention Centre & Hotel, Toronto Dominion Centre, the Supreme Court of Canada and the National Gallery of Canada. Gabriel Mackinnon has received awards from Progressive Architecture, Canadian Architect, the International Association of Lighting Designers, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the Canadian Historical Association. As well, the firm's work has been published in many professional and popular media.
